A 30-year-old woman from Co Limerick, who was the driver of a car involved in a serious road traffic collision which caused life-changing injuries to a garda inspector, is to face further charges arising from the incident.

Niamh McDonnell, with an address at Gortskagh, Castlemahon, Co Limerick, has already pleaded guilty to two charges of drink-driving, and dangerous driving causing serious injury to Garda Inspector Niall Flood arising from the collision on the evening of 30 June last year.

Garda Flood was cycling near the village of Drumcolliher when he was struck by a car driven by McDonnell.

He was treated at the roadside by paramedics, before being airlifted to Cork University Hospital, where he underwent surgery for serious injuries to his leg.

The case had been listed for mention at Limerick Circuit Court today with the intention of setting a sentencing date before the end of July.

The court was told McDonnell is facing further charges in the case.

The court was further informed that a probation report due in the matter was not complete. A medical report outlining the extensive injuries suffered by Garda Flood is due to be ready this week.

Judge Tom O'Donnell put the case back for mention to 27 July with a view to the defendant facing arraignment on further counts that day, and setting a sentencing date and hearing evidence later in the autumn.

He remanded the defendant on continuing bail to appear in court on that date.
