Woman dies after trying to rescue her son off Cork coast

A woman who was rescued along with her child from the sea near Ballycotton off the east Cork coast has died.

The woman, who was in her 30s, and her son got into difficulty in the water at Ballycroneen beach, Cloyne between Ballycotton and Guileen.

The emergency services were alerted and the Rescue 117 helicopter, Ballycotton lifeboat, Crosshaven lifeboat, Guileen Coast Guard and Ballycotton Coast Guard were called to the scene.

The woman was airlifted to Cork University Hospital in a critical condition, but was pronounced dead yesterday evening.

The young boy, who was rescued from the rocks, has non-life threatening injuries, gardaí said.

Investigations are ongoing.
