Gardaí say they are now treating as murder the death of a 32-year-old man, following a stabbing in Cork city centre on Wednesday evening.

This follows completion of a post-mortem examination on the body of Jason Butler, who died yesterday at Cork University Hospital after he was stabbed during a row on the Grand Parade.

The post -mortem examination was conducted this morning at Cork University Hospital by the State Pathologist, Dr SallyAnne Collis.

Gardaí say the results are not being made public for operational reasons. However, the investigating team is now treating Mr Butler's death as murder, based on preliminary results of the post-mortem examination which have been furnished to them.

Aaron Babington appeared in court over the incident

A 29-year old man has been before the district court in connection with the assault on Mr Butler.

Aaron Babington, of Churchfield Avenue, Churchfield, in Cork, was brought before the Cork District Court yesterday charged with assault causing harm to Mr Butler.

Judge Olann Kelleher remanded Mr Babington in custody.

He will be back before the court again next Thursday.

Mr Butler was originally from Midleton in east Cork.

He was unemployed and lived at Deerpark House in Friar's Walk, Cork, a home run by the charity Depaul to provide support services for people to move from homelessness.
