A 32-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital after he was stabbed during a row with another man in Cork city centre.

The incident happened between 7.30pm and 8pm on the Grand Parade.

A group of people were drinking on a small pedestrianised area, close to Daunt Square at the junction with Patrick Street, when a row broke out between two of the men.

The area was busy at the time and passers-by intervened and broke up the row.

A man in his early 20s ran from the scene and was arrested a short distance away.

It is understood a second man has been arrested

Gardaí from the Armed Response Unit in Cork and ambulance personnel spent a considerable time treating the injured man on the street before he was rushed to Cork University Hospital.

He underwent emergency treatment at the hospital.

Technical and forensic examinations were undertaken at two scenes that were cordoned off on the Grand Parade.

Detectives also began interviewing witnesses.

Gardaí are appealing to road users and pedestrians who have camera or phone footage of the Grand Parade and Daunt Square area between 7.15pm and 8pm to contact them.
