The body of a young man has been recovered from the lake at Killaloe in Co Clare following an incident involving a jet ski.

It is understood the man, along with two girls, were travelling on the jet ski on Lough Derg near the bridge at Killaloe when it flipped over and all three were thrown into the water.

The two girls, who were wearing life jackets, managed to swim to safety but the male - believed to be a teenager - was lost underwater.

The alarm was raised shortly before 5.30pm and Killaloe Coast Guard Unit was sent to the scene and began a search, along with the local fire brigade.

Rescue 115 helicopter from Shannon was also involved in the search.

The man's body, which was located near the bridge at around 7.30pm, was taken to University Hospital Limerick for a post-mortem examination.

The jet ski will be examined as part of an investigation to establish what happened.
