Aircraft landed safely after issuing a 'pan-pan' alert

Fire fighters at Cork Airport were put on standby earlier this morning after a French military aircraft issued a 'pan-pan' alert declaring a fire on board and that it needed urgent help.

The incident happened at around 7.30am and the turboprop plane, with around 20 people on board, landed safely at the airport 40 minutes later.

There was no sign of fire and all on board the aircraft were reported to be well.

The crew declined assistance and requested that the aircraft would not be inspected by Cork Airport police and members of the fire service.

The crew have asked to be allowed to re-fuel and it is understood the plane will leave Cork later today.

Its location when the 'pan-pan' was declared and the purpose of the flight are not known.

A 'pan-pan' is an international emergency signal used to declare that an aircraft, ship or other vessel needs help, but the situation does not pose immediate danger.
