Limerick city has been chosen as the city to host a global film conference.

The Cineposium conference brings figures from the film industry together to discuss policy, economic development and screen production.

Limerick was picked as the city to host the conference following a competitive bid process.

Minister for Arts Catherine Martin made the announcement with Screen Ireland, Innovate Limerick and the Association of Film Commissioners International.

The minister is in LA as part of a trade mission to promote the Irish film industry ahead of the Academy Awards tomorrow. It is a record year for the Irish film industry with 14 Oscar nominations.

"This is an excellent opportunity to build on the current wave of success that is happening across the screen industry, and to further strengthen our partnerships with international production companies and studios around the world," she said.

"Being able to showcase Ireland as a global production hub is a fantastic way to drive more international production to all parts of the country, further developing skills and opportunities for Irish talent and our skilled crew base here."

It is the first time that Cineposium is taking place in Ireland, and it is due to get under way in September.
