Section of new Kerry greenway blocked by locked gates

Kerry County Council says that efforts are under way to resolve an "issue" that saw a section of the new Tralee to Fenit greenway blocked by locked gates over the weekend.

The 11 kilometre greenway was officially opened last Friday, but within 24 hours, walkers and cyclists on the route found their way obstructed by two access gates tied together in the middle of the route, forcing them onto a main road.

Council staff were alerted and untied the gates, but they had to return again on Sunday when the two were locked together once more.

In a statement issued today, the Council said it "is aware of this issue and is engaged with relevant parties to resolve the matter".

The route of the new greenway runs along an old, intact railway line and so it is not yet clear as to what the issue is.

But local Sinn Féin Councillor Cathal Foley said it needs to be resolved as soon as possible given the importance of greenway routes to the county.

"If mediation doesn't work, Kerry County Council will have to take legal action to keep our public rights of way open," Mr Foley said.
