Former RTÉ News Executive and journalist Dermot Mullane has died at his home in Ballina, Co Tipperary.

Mr Mullane was a senior programme editor with RTÉ News for many years, and worked as a reporter with the Irish Times prior to his career in RTÉ.

He began working with RTÉ News in the mid 1970s, and worked on RTÉ’s foreign desk, and also presented Newsnight on RTÉ television in the 1980s, before moving to editing RTÉ's One News and Six One News as Programme Editor.

Mr Mullane retired to Ballina 30 years ago where he lived with his second wife Kay McGuinness, founder of Southern Advertising in Limerick and a former member of the RTÉ Board.

He was pre-deceased by his first wife, the late Christina Murphy in 1996. She had been Education Editor and Duty Editor of the Irish Times for many years.

Mr Mullane, who had been ill with Parkinson's disease for a number of years, died peacefully at his home on Friday.

He is survived by his wife Kay, his son Eric, daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, his two sisters and extended family.
