An investigation is continuing into what happened to an eight-year-old girl who sustained severe injuries in a violent incident at a house in Clarecastle in Co Clare yesterday.

She has been moved to the children's hospital in Crumlin, Dublin, where she is in a critical but stable condition.

Her mother, who was found unconscious in a room at the house, is also in a critical condition and is being treated at University Hospital Limerick.

It is understood they had been living at the house for a number of weeks after fleeing the war in Ukraine.

Gardaí believe at this stage that the incident was contained to the house and are not seeking another party.

An incident room has been set up at Ennis Garda Station and a family liaison officer has been appointed to the family.

Minister for Children Roderic O'Gorman said his Department was in contact with teams in Clare.

He described it as a "really tragic situation" but added that the Department was aware of it soon after it occurred.

The Minister said they were offering whatever supports they can, and to Tusla as well.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information on the incident to contact the investigation team at Ennis Garda Station 065 6848100, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
