A man has died in a drowning incident in west Limerick.

It is understood the man, aged in his 70s, got into difficulty yesterday evening while swimming at Kilteery Pier which is located close to Loughill on the Shannon Estuary.

The incident happened shortly before 8pm.

Emergency services were called to the scene, but the man died after being taken from the water.

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances around the man's death and are preparing a file for the Coroner's Court.

An inquest will be held at a later date.
