Tributes have been paid to a man who lost his life in a boating accident during a coastal regatta in Cromane, Co Kerry last night.
Named locally as 53-year-old Brendan Teahan, a married man, and a well-known fisherman, it is understood he had been helping out with the collection of buoys after the Cromane Regatta, when he fell from a boat.
The last race was around 9pm and at around 9.45pm, the Valentia Lifeboat and the Rescue 115 helicopter at Shannon were both called to the area, Valentia Coastguard said.
His body was recovered before they got to the scene where a heavy fog had come down.
Mr Teahan was involved in the local oyster and mussel industry and draft net salmon fishing.
Hs wife, Mary B Teahan, is well known in rowing circles for her work with coastal regattas and her reports on Radio Kerry.
"The whole area is in shock. Brendan was a most sincere, generous man. He was a great husband, a great neighbour, a great friend. He loved fishing. He loved regattas," Fianna Fáil Cllr Michael Cahill, a family friend, said.
The chairman of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Francis Flynn also extended his sympathy at the monthly meeting of the council, on Monday.
