Fine Gael Councillor Deirdre Forde has been elected as the new Lord Mayor of Cork.

She succeeds Colm Kelleher after she was elected with 21 votes.

The election took place during the annual general meeting of Cork City Council at City Hall.

In her speech, the Douglas-based councillor said that her priorities for the year include driving the sustainability agenda, creating a "city for people", the promotion of arts and furthering female participation in politics.

Meanwhile, Independent Cllr Danny Collins has been elected the Mayor of Cork county. The Schull native was nominated by Cllr Declan Hurley and seconded by Cllr Seamus McGrath.
