Brothers among eight in court in connection with Tipperary assault

Eight men, including two brothers, have appeared in court in connection with an investigation into an incident in Co Tipperary last year which left a 19-year-old man with serious injuries.

Ross Whelan was assaulted during an incident in the village of Upperchurch, Co Tipperary on the night of 27 June, 2021, and was subsequently treated at Cork University hospital.

Five men were initially arrested by gardaí in July 2021, and a further three were arrested and questioned in subsequent months.

The eight men appeared at Thurles District court today, all charged with violent disorder in connection with the events of that night.

One of the eight was also charged with assault causing serious harm to Mr. Whelan.

The eight are Patrick Burke, 19, of Roskeen, Drombane Co Tippeary who is charged with assaulting Ross Whelan causing him harm, and with violent disorder on the night contrary to the Public Order Act.

His brother Joseph Burke, 18, of the same address, is charged with violent disorder as are six others.

They are 20-year-old Aaron Breen of Freighduff, Cashel, Co Tipperary, Joseph O'Donoghue, also 20, of Drombane Cross, Brian O'Dwyer of Prices Lot, Cashel, 19.

As well as Sean Ryan, 19, of Beechview, The Commons, Cashel, A J Shanahan, 20, of Seskin, Upperchurch and Aidan Slattery, 20 of Brocka, Ballycahill, all in Co Tipperary.

Judge Elizabeth McGrath remanded the eight on continuing bail of €500 with a number of conditions attached.

The conditions include that they are not to have contact with named parties and to stay away from certain named areas, to appear at Thurles District court again on 27 September for the service of the book of evidence in the case.
