Appeal for information over fatal assault in Limerick city

Gardaí have this evening renewed an appeal for information on an assault in Limerick which led to the death of a man in his 40s.

The incident happened last night at 10.25pm outside Colbert Station, Parnell Street in the city.

Gardaí who attended the scene found a man who had been seriously injured. He was brought to University Hospital Limerick for treatment, but died later.

A post-mortem has been taking place this evening at the hospital.

The scene was sealed off last night and a technical examination was carried out this morning by members of the local garda scenes of crime unit.

Gardaí from Roxboro Road station are also working to secure and view any CCTV footage from the area which could be of relevance.

At a media briefing this evening, Superintendent Dermot O'Connor, who is leading the inquiry, stressed that the investigation is at a very early stage.

"Our appeal is for witnesses to come forward," he said. "Our first appeal is for any person or persons who were in the Parnell Street area in Limerick last night, Good Friday, the 15th of April, between 10pm and 10.40pm, for any person or road-users who were in Parnell Street and adjoining Lord Edward Street and Davis Street who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, to make that footage available to our investigating team, and also for any person who may have information relevant to our investigation please to contact Roxboro Road Garda Station on 061 214340 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111."

Gardaí would not be drawn on any speculation as to what exactly happened to the man or on any background to the fatal assault, but Supt O'Connor did seek to reassure the public about the garda response.

"This area of Limerick is regularly patrolled by gardaí, we have a dedicated community policing team assigned to the area. If anyone has any concerns, please feel free to contact us at Roxboro Road Garda Station and we will endeavour to allay any of those concerns."
