A 42-year-old man has been before the district court in Cork charged with the murder of his brother and the attempted murder of his father.
John Murphy, of Seaview Avenue, Carrigaline, Co Cork, was arrested after gardaí were called to a house at Seaview Avenue in Carrigaline in the early hours of Saturday.
They found 27-year-old Shane Murphy in the house. He had been stabbed. He was pronounced dead a short time later.
His father, 75-year-old John Murphy senior, had earlier presented himself at the emergency department of Cork University Hospital. He had also been stabbed. He underwent emergency surgery and is now in a stable condition.
This morning, John Murphy was brought before the district court in Cork, where Detective Garda Ian Breen gave evidence of charging him with the murder of his brother, Shane, and the attempted murder of his father, John senior, at their home in Carrigaline on Saturday.
He was also charged with two counts of producing a knife, capable of inflicting serious injury.

Detective Garda Breen said Mr Murphy made no reply when the charges were read to him.
Sergeant Pat Lyons said the State's application was for a remand in custody for a week.
Defence solicitor Frank Buttimer, who was appointed to represent Mr Murphy on free legal aid, said there was some painting work available to him prior to his arrest.
He said a bail application will be made on his behalf to the High Court.
He asked Judge Olann Kelleher to direct that Mr Murphy be given any medical attention he may require while in prison.
Judge Kelleher remanded John Murphy in custody for a week.
