Sinn Féin councillor for Limerick City North John Costello has announced he is to resign his seat on the city council for health reasons.

Cllr Costello, who is one of two Sinn Féin councillors on Limerick City Council, said he can no longer give the time and effort that is necessary for an elected representative.

He said he has taken the difficult decision to step back from a heavy workload and concentrate on his health.

Cllr Costello was co-opted onto Limerick City Council in 2016, following the election of Sinn Féin TD Maurice Quinlivan.

He subsequently won a seat for the party in the local elections of 2019.

Mr Quinlivan paid tribute to his work and wished him well and good health for the future.
