The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the family of a Co Limerick man who has died in an accident in Greece.

Darren Whelan was aged 23 and from the Kildimo area of Co Limerick.

He died following a fall on the island of Ios.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said: "The Department of Foreign Affairs is aware of the case and providing consular assistance.

"The department does not comment on individual details of any specific case."

Mr Whelan was a member of Kildimo Pallaskenry GAA club.

In a statement. it said: "We extend our deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to Darren's mother Geraldine, father Eddie and brothers Gavin and Eamon and extended family on the loss of their beloved son and brother.

"To all those who knew Darren, as a friend or as a team mate, we offer our condolences and support at this difficult time.

"Darren had a positive and enthusiastic outlook on life and was an exciting, skillful and popular player who always gave 100%."
