A man has died while climbing Cnoc Bréanainn (Mount Brandon) in Co Kerry.

The 56-year-old was climbing the pilgrim route with family members and friends when he took ill near the 10th cross shortly after 1.30pm.

Valentia Coast Guard coordinated a rescue effort and Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue 115 was tasked from Shannon.

However, due to poor visibility on the mountain the helicopter was unable to reach the casualty.

Members of Dingle Coastguard and Kerry Mountain Rescue were also tasked to the scene.

Those accompanying the man continued to administer CPR until the mountain rescue services arrived at 3.30pm.

Conditions on the mountain at the time were described as extremely poor.

Members of Dingle Coastguard carried the deceased to the base of the mountain where the body was handed over to the Ambulance Service.

Meanwhile, on Carrauntoohil, an 80-year-old man is being helped down off the mountain by Kerry Mountain Rescue.

He is believed to be suffering from exhaustion.
