The experience of working during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the rapid and innovative medical advancements it has brought about, is the theme of a conference being held online by University College Cork next week.

Its aim is to draw on the experiences of leading medical and scientific experts in fighting Covid-19.

The conference is being hosted by UCC's Biomedical Science Society as well as the College's Public Health, Science, Pharmacy, Biomed and Medical Research & Technology Societies.

Among those addressing the five-day online conference will be Dr Christina Dold, a senior research scientist at the Oxford Vaccine Group.

She will be joined by HSE CEO Paul Reid; Dr Cillian de Gascun, the Director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory; and UCC's Professor of Epidemiology Patricia Kearney.

Dr Angela Flynn, of the UCC School of Nursing & Midwifery, will share her experience as a frontline worker while Aisling O'Donnell from Boots Ireland will discuss the roll-out of pharmacy-based Covid-19 testing.

UCC Biomedical Science Society chairperson Katie O'Brien said the inspiration for the conference was that while there were many "incredible scientific and medical developments occurring each day", organisers believe the narrative was often focused on the negative stories.

"Our frontline workers and scientists have been working tirelessly from the beginning of the pandemic and we wanted to provide a platform for them to share their experiences," she said.
