Skeletal remains have been found along an old railway line on the outskirts of Midleton.

The discovery was made by workmen on the Midleton to Youghal greenway route near the Dungourney Road at 4.30pm yesterday.

The skull - believed to be male and possibly there for some time - was found near the 'Shanty Gate' on the old railway line at Westpark, 3km east of Midleton.

Gardaí have cordoned off an area and the services of the State Pathologist's office have been requested.

Superintendent Adrian Gamble of Midleton Garda Station said they are treating the discovery as suspicious, pending further investigations.

One line of inquiry is that the remains could be historical.
