Clonmel clean-up operation after Storm Ellen tears roof off building

A clean-up operation is under way at The Regal Centre/O'Keeffe Furniture on Davis Road in Clonmel, Co Tipperary, after part of the roof lifted off the building during Storm Ellen last night.

Mary O'Keeffe of O'Keeffe Furniture said "high winds caught a part of the roof and then just section by section lifted it".

She revealed that "thankfully nobody was injured, it could have been a lot worse, so we are just thankful for that".

Ms O'Keeffe said the damage to the business is "significant" but it can be fixed and "the fact there were no injuries or anything worse is the main thing for us as a family and a business in the town".

Debris from the roof was strewn across Davis Road

Last night, emergency services and ESB crews helped make the site safe and local contractors and council crews were clearing the site this morning.

The Regal Centre/O'Keeffe Furniture is closed until further notice and it is hoped to get the building sealed up quickly to prevent any further damage.

Ms O'Keeffe has asked the public to keep clear of the site and the road is closed to traffic.
