A 66-year-old man has died in a farming accident in Co Cork.

He has been named locally as John O'Callaghan of Munroe, Carrigaline.

Mr O'Callaghan, who was a dairy farmer, was well known and respected in farming circles throughout the county.

It is believed that he was working with a digger with his son at an out-farm close to their home when the accident occurred at around 9.30pm last night. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was taken to Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place today.

Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority have launched separate investigations.

This is the 14th farm death in Ireland this year.
