Fine Gael Councillor for Cork city Joe Kavanagh is the newly elected Lord Mayor of Cork.
He succeeds Fianna Fáil City Councillor Dr. John Sheehan and will hold the office until June 2021.
Formally nominated by Fine Gael Councillor Des Cahill, and seconded by Fianna Fáil's Tony Fitzgerald, he was elected by 20 votes to 8 for Independent Councillor Thomas Maloney at the City Council's annual general meeting at City Hall tonight.
Due to Covid-19, the Lord Mayor's Chain of Office was sanitized before the newly elected Lord Mayor put it on himself.
Councillor Kavanagh, who has served the city's North East Ward since his election in 2011, told the gathering that he would embrace the role with diligence, enthusiasm and professionalism at all times.
A native of Cobh, and the eldest of 3 children, he was educated in St Colman's College in Fermoy and he graduated from CIT with a marketing degree.
A tennis coach for almost 20 years, he is married to Stephanie and has two sons, Glenn and Philip and a grandson, Theo.
