A parade through the streets of Waterford this evening will get the ball rolling on this year's Renault GAA World Games, which have attracted thousands of players and supporters from around the globe.

Around 100 teams are taking part in the week-long event, from every continent, with many of the sides featuring players who are not from Ireland or have no family connection to Ireland.

Registration has been taking place today in Waterford city ahead of the start of the action.

Matches will start at Waterford Institute of Technology's Sports Campus in Carriganore, on the edge of the city, tomorrow and continue there until Thursday, before moving to Croke Park on Friday for eight finals.

Players will compete in "native" and "non-native" competitions in hurling, camogie and men's and ladies' Gaelic football.

The event is expected to provide a €1.5 million boost to the local economy in Waterford, with players and their coaches, family members and other supporters hosted by GAA clubs in the area.
