Two arrested after drugs, cash seized in Tipperary

Two men are being questioned in connection with the seizure of over €500,000 worth of cannabis and ecstasy in Co Tipperary.

The men were arrested following a chase yesterday afternoon in Ballinure after gardaí tried to stop a van.

The drugs were found in follow-up searches at homes last night.

Garda Operation Overwatch was set up in Tipperary to tackle drug dealing and serious crime in the county.

At around 3.45pm yesterday afternoon officers on a drugs and crime patrol in the  Ballinure area pursued a van they had earlier tried to stop.

Two packages were thrown from the van and around €150,000 worth of ecstasy tablets were retrieved.

When the van was stopped a short distance away two men were arrested.

During follow-up searches at homes in Cashel and Killenaule another €400,000 worth of cannabis herb and €21,000 in cash were recovered.

The drugs were discovered by the canine unit concealed in a converted shed.

The two men, aged 22 and 45, are known to gardaí and are being detained today at Thurles Garda Station.

They can be questioned for up to seven days.
