A 34-year-old man was caught with more than 2,000 child abuse images and more than a dozen child abuse video files while he was an employee of the child and family agency Tusla, the Circuit Criminal Court in Cork has been told.
Denis O'Donovan, of 40 Forrest Ridge, Doughcloyne, Togher, Cork, pleaded guilty to the offence at the court today.
The court was told he was employed by Tusla, in an administrative capacity. A garda witness says he was not aware that O'Donovan had contact with children.
The court was told that most of the images and all of the video files were of the most serious category-one type.
Gardaí were alerted by the National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre. Denis O'Donovan was present when his home was searched by gardaí on 9 March, 2017, and initially claimed he was researching child pornography as part of his work.
However, he later admitted looking at pictures of naked children under the age of 17.
Denis O'Donovan's defence barrister Sinead Behan told the court he is now in alternative employment and is attending counselling.
Sentencing was adjourned until November by Judge Sean Ó'Donnabháin.
