A man in his 70s has died after the car he was driving struck a pole in Fermoy.

The incident happened on Mill Road in the Co Cork town shortly after 2pm.

The man, who was the only occupant of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has been taken to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place.

The road was closed for a forensic examination but has since reopened.
