A man in his 60s has died following a car crash near the village of Mountshannon in Co Clare.

Gardaí were called to the scene of the crash on the R352 in Co Clare at around 2.45pm.

It is understood that the man's car left the road and struck a ditch. The man was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

His body has since been taken to the mortuary at University Hospital Limerick (UHL) for a post-mortem examination.

A passenger in the car, who was also in his 60s, was taken to UHL for treatment but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Garda forensic collision investigators are due to examine the scene. The local coroner has been notified and local traffic diversions are in place around the site.
