A new journalism course aimed at training the next generation of sports journalists has been launched at the University of Limerick.
RTÉ Sports presenter Jacqui Hurley along with Irish Examiner Sports Editor Tony Leen and former Ireland and Munster rugby player and BBC sports pundit Keith Wood, will be among the lecturers on the new Masters programme which gets under way in September.
UL already offers regular BA and MA in journalism studies. The programme will offer new modules in sports writing, broadcasting and communications, as well as the sociology of sport.

Course leader Fergal Quinn said the course is the first of its kind in the country and is a new step in making UL a centre of excellence for learning about all aspects of sports journalism, and contributing to the future of the industry.
Head of journalism at UL Mary Dundon said the new programme is part of the continued growth of journalism learning at UL, which is now marking its 10th year, and they are delighted to be the first university in Ireland to respond to the demand for this specialist area.
Ms Hurley said the strong sporting pedigree of the University of Limerick made it a natural fit for extending into the world of sports journalism.
Mr Wood said harnessing the skills and knowledge to help prepare for the future while playing sport is a very difficult balancing act and the course bridges the gap and offers the pathway to journalism and sports communications.
Mr Leen said that sports writing had changed dramatically, but engaging, insightful writing still trumps all.
