A 12-year-old girl is being treated in hospital in Limerick after getting into difficulty in a boating incident on the River Shannon in the city this morning.

She was one of a group of four young females whose boat overturned in the river shortly after 10am.

The boat was located at the Old Weir on the River Shannon.

It is understood the girl got trapped under their rowing boat and had to be helped by the Fireswift rescue craft operated by Limerick fire service.

She was treated by medical personnel initially at St Michael’s boat club at the quayside before being brought to hospital in Limerick.

She is to be moved to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin for treatment.

Three other teenage girls who were in the boat were uninjured.

The Shannon-based rescue helicopter was also called to the scene of the incident but was stood down.
