A man in his 20s has been arrested in connection with a fatal assault in Killorglin, Co Kerry, on Sunday morning.

The man was arrested in Co Kerry this morning and is being held at Killarney Garda Station.

Stephen O'Connor, from Glencar, was critically injured during an incident outside a fast-food outlet in the town in the early hours of Sunday.

Mr O'Connor died at Cork University Hospital on Monday. He had been in the hospital's intensive care unit.

The 32-year-old worked locally as a labourer in construction and on farms. He had been socialising with friends on Saturday night/Sunday morning when the altercation occurred.

Gardaí said a post-mortem examination has been completed and details are not being released for operational reasons.

The family of the deceased are asking for privacy at this time.
