A song by a group of Co Cork students in aid of a fellow student who has been diagnosed with cancer has been downloaded more than 13,000 times since featuring on RTÉ News yesterday.

The students from St Colman’s College, Fermoy, recorded a cover of the Bill Withers hit Lean on Me to raise money for families affected by cancer, as well as Crumlin Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House and Bumbleance.

The recording is currently at the top of the iTunes download chart and the students, who are members of the transition year choir, are hoping for a Christmas number one.

Around 35c from each download is donated directly to the causes identified by the students.

In addition, more than €8,000 has been raised through a separate online appeal for donations.

A video of the choir's recording was uploaded to YouTube on Sunday. It has been viewed more than 70,000 times.

In October, the college's transition year choir rallied to send a message of support to one of their schoolmates who had been diagnosed with cancer.

And the message delivered powerful boost to the student, who is responding well to treatment.

Music teacher Sarah Barry uploaded the recording to iTunes last week. The track is available to view and download by searching ColmansStandTogether.
