The 219 passengers who were on board an American Airlines flight which made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport earlier are being accommodated in local hotels overnight.

The plane, which was en route from Paris to Miami in Florida, made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport this afternoon following a mechanical difficulty.

A spokesperson for the airline said it was intended that the flight would resume its journey to Miami tomorrow morning.

A multi-agency emergency plan was mounted earlier at Shannon Airport after the crew declared a Mayday at around 1.15pm, after reporting an issue with one of the jet's engines.

The Boeing 777-200 jet was over an hour northwest of Shannon at the time. It was about three hours into its flight from Paris to Miami at the time.

Units of Clare County Fire and Rescue Service from Shannon Town and Ennis supported the airport's own fire and rescue service.

A number of National Ambulance Service resources and Garda units were also dispatched to the airport.
