A 13-month-old baby girl has died following an incident involving the cord of a window blind at her home in Cork city.

The emergency services were called to the family home at Dublin Hill this lunchtime after the child's mother discovered her unconscious and entangled in the cord.

It is understood the child had been in a portable cot in a room in the house.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate the child at the scene before she was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Gardaí describe the incident as a "tragic accident" and say a file will be prepared for the Coroner's Court following a post-mortem examination.

That examination is due to be carried out later this evening or early tomorrow.
