An application has been lodged by Kerry County Council to develop a 32km greenway in the south of the county.

The proposed greenway would run between Glenbeigh and Reenard on the Iveragh Peninsula in the county.

According to a statement released by the council after the application was lodged with An Bord Pleanála, 197 landowners are impacted by the planned route.

Some of these landowners have previously accused the council of using a heavy-handed approach to acquire land for the project.

The council say the three-metre wide greenway will run from Reenward, southwest of Cahirciveen, to the townland of Faha, west of Glenbeigh.

The route will mainly follow that of the abandoned Great Southern Railway line, with some sections being built on adjacent land.

The project will also involve the construction of car parks and the upgrading of some existing bridges and tunnels along the route.

The council say an Environmental Impact Assessment Report has been prepared for the project.

Similar greenway projects have been launched in a number of locations, including the very successful Waterford Greenway and the Achill Greenway in Co Mayo.
