Cork County Council has confirmed it is looking at permanently closing the Waterloo junction on the N20 - the main Cork to Limerick road.

This follows a number of serious road traffic collisions at the junction involving tourists, including one fatal incident in 2017 in which two Americans lost their lives.

Earlier this year, another two American tourists were injured in a crash remarkably similar to the earlier one.

The busy junction on the N20 is used by motorists travelling to and from Blarney, Waterloo and the western side of the city.

In a statement issued this afternoon, the local authority said it is considering permanently closing the junction.

This is a statutory process involving public consultation and more details will be made available in due course.
