A man who was the victim of an assault in Waterford city at the weekend has died in hospital.

The 27-year-old man received head injuries in the assault at the junction of John Street and The Manor in the city at around 3am on Saturday 7 July.

He was taken to University Hospital Waterford before being transferred to Cork University Hospital, where he died.

A 25-year-old man was arrested on Sunday morning and held at Waterford Garda Station.

He was released without charge on Sunday evening and a file will be prepared for the DPP.

Gardaí say the investigation is ongoing.
