Man drowns after getting into difficulty while swimming in Shannon

A man in his 40s has drowned after getting into difficulty while swimming in the River Shannon this afternoon.

Shortly after 5pm, the man got into difficulty while swimming at Parteen Railway Bridge, Thomondgate, Limerick.

The alarm was raised and gardaí and local fire services attended the scene.

The man was taken from the water a short time later and brought by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick where he was pronounced dead.

A file will be prepared for the Coroner.
