A husband and wife from the UK have died in a two-vehicle crash near Dromkeen in Co Limerick.

The collision between a truck and a car happened on a straight section of the N24 Limerick to Tipperary road at Gortnadromin shortly before 11am.

A man in his 80s and a woman in her 70s who were travelling in the car were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The couple were visiting Ireland from the UK.

Post-mortem examinations are to be carried out at University Hospital Limerick.

A man in his 40s who was driving the lorry was taken to University Hospital Limerick.

His condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

Emergency services remain at the scene.

The road is closed in both directions and diversions are in place.
