A replica mud cabin - An Bothán -  has been built on the grounds of University College Cork as part of the National Famine Commemoration event taking place this weekend there.

"It is to serve as a stark reminder of how the poorest lived - and died, during the Great Irish Famine of 1845 to 1852", according to Mike Murphy, head of cartography in UCC's Geography Department.

The hut was built by the buildings and estates staff at UCC and will remain in place for a number of months following Saturday's National Famine Commemoration at the college this year.

President Michael D Higgins will lay a wreath on behalf of the people of Ireland at the State ceremony which begins at 2pm.

He will be joined by Tánaiste Simon Coveney, as well as a number of ambassadors to Ireland, the Lord Mayor of Cork, the Mayor of County Cork and the presidents of UCC and Cork Institute of Technology.

The annual National Famine Commemoration event , which will also include music and readings, is open to the general public.

A new online resource, the Great Famine Online will also be officially launched on the day showing users how the famine affected where they lived.

Born out of the Atlas of the Great Irish Famine, it marks a major collaboration between Geography Department, UCC and the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.

The first National Famine Commemoration took place in 2009, after a Government decision to commemorate the Great Irish Famine with an annual national famine memorial day.

A number of other events are also happening across the county.

In Skibbereen, a famine walk of the town takes place on Thursday evening, while on Saturday, commemorative plaques in Famine related sites will be unveiled in Youghal.

On Sunday, wreath laying ceremonies will take place at the Famine mass graves at St Joseph's Cemetery in Ballyphehane and at All Saints Cemetery on Carr's Hill.
