Gardaí believe a fire which caused smoke damage to a church in Kenmare in Co Kerry was started accidentally.

The alarm was raised at Holy Cross Catholic Church in the town at around 9am this morning.

Two units of the fire brigade from Kenmare and Sneem attended the scene and quickly extinguished the fire.

While there was some smoke damage, it is understood weddings and First Holy Communions scheduled to take place in the coming weeks will go ahead as planned.
