A man has been brought before Limerick District Court charged in connection with the seizure of a loaded firearm in the city centre on Monday night.

25-year-old Paul Sheehy, who has an address at Childers Road Apartments, Southern Ring Road, Roxboro in Limerick, faces two charges under the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act.

He is accused of unlawfully having a semi-automatic pistol and 13 rounds of ammunition near Colbert Station in the city on 9 April last.

It is alleged the firearm and ammunition were located in a backpack when the defendant was stopped and searched by gardaí during an intelligence-led operation.

Mr Sheehy was taken to Roxboro Road Garda Station following his arrest and he was formally charged and brought before the court after directions were received from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Gardaí indicated they will be opposing any application for bail which is expected to be made at Limerick District Court tomorrow.
