A 49-year-old man has died in a workplace incident in Co Cork earlier today.

It is understood the man was fatally injured when some pallets fell on him while working at an Irish Distillers depot in Dungourney, near Midleton in east Cork.

It happened shortly after 9am.

Irish Distillers confirmed the death in a statement in which it said a staff member was involved in a serious incident which resulted in a fatality at its Dungourney operation this morning.

The company expressed its deepest sympathy to his family and said they "are offering all the support available to those affected by this tragic accident."

Both gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority have begun separate investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.

A file will be prepared for the Coroner's court in due course.
