An investigation is under way into the theft of the deputy mayoral chain which was stolen from a city councillor's car in Limerick.
Independent Councillor Frankie Daly, who had deputised for the Metropolitan Mayor at a number of events over the weekend, had left the chain in the glove compartment of his car in Corbally last Sunday night.
He said he was due to present a number of jerseys to young soccer players in the Ballinacurra Weston area of the city on Monday, when he discovered the chain had been stolen.
A number of Christmas presents left in the car by his wife were also stolen.
The chain, made of silver and gold and estimated to be worth several thousand euro, had been specially commissioned and made just three years ago to mark the amalgamation of Limerick city and county.
Cllr Daly said he was horrified and shocked when he discovered the theft and immediately reported the incident to gardaí.

He appealed to those who stole the chain or to anyone who has information about it to return it or to speak to gardaí.
"This is a citizens chain, it belongs to the people of Limerick, and I am making a sincere appeal that it be returned," he said.
