Triplets have been born to one of Fota Wildlife Park's Asian lionesses, in a first for the park's endangered animal programme.

The three were born two week's ago to first-time parents, mother Gira and father Shanto.

The park is enjoying something of a cub-boom at the moment with the recently announced birth of a Sumatran tiger cub and a litter of four Cheetah cubs.

Fota Wildlife Park's Director Sean McKeown says it is the park's first time taking part in the international breeding programme for Asian lions and they are delighted with this success.

With only 500 remaining in the wild, Asian lions are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

The pride of Asian lions at the park includes five-year-old male Shanto, and two sisters, Gira & Gita, who are 3 years old.
