A forty-bed mental health facility for older people has opened in Co Kerry following a €13 million investment.
The Health Service Executive's Deer Lodge in Killarney replaces the former O'Connor Unit, which the health board says is outdated and unsuitable.
Sinead Glenon, head of HSE Mental Health Services, says the facility represents a huge step forward in the care it can provide.
The new facility is divided into four "households" linked by a central communal area.
Each resident will have their own en suite bedroom.
The opening represents an overall increase of eight beds in mental health services in Co Kerry.
