Work on transforming a former steel waste slag heap on Haulbowline Island in Cork harbour into a public green space is to begin next month.

Cork County Council says this marks a significant milestone in the re-development of the East Tip site, once a dumping ground for waste from the country's only steel manufacturing plant - Irish Ispat.

Haulbowline Island is also the base for the Irish Naval Service.

Cork County Council has signed an €8 million contract with PJ Hegarty & Sons for the final stages of remedial work on the nine hectares of reclaimed land.

It is due to be completed by December 2018.

The new park will include playing pitches, walking/jogging circuit, picnic areas, viewing points and a car park.

Since 2011, Cork County Council has been dealing with legacy issues associated with the former site.

Planning permission for the park was granted in 2014, along with a waste licence and foreshore license for the site.

Cork County Council's Deputy Chief Executive Declan Daly said this project has been many years in the making and its redevelopment will be of enormous benefit to local communities.
