The funeral of former Fine Gael TD Austin Deasy has taken place in his home town of Dungarvan in Co Waterford.

Mr Deasy died on Saturday after a short illness aged 80.

He served as a TD from 1977 until 2002 and as agriculture minister from 1982 to 1987.

When he retired from politics he was succeeded by his son John, who is still a member of the Dáil.

Chief mourners included his wife Kathleen, his children John, Sally, Jane and Jamie and many relatives.

Among those who attended the funeral were Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar, ministers Simon Coveney, Richard Bruton, Paul Kehoe and many other TDs, councillors and figures from the world of business and sport in Waterford and beyond.
