Traveller activist Quilligan to get honorary doctorate

Traveller activist Brigid Quilligan will receive an Honorary Doctorate from University College Cork today, the first Irish Traveller to receive such an honour.

From Limerick, and the eldest of 11 children, Ms Quilligan is a former director of the Traveller Movement and is currently the manager of the Kerry Travellers' Health and Community Development Project.

She has represented the Irish Traveller Movement at the UN Human Rights Committee.

Among others receiving doctorates at UCC today are RTÉ broadcaster Miriam O'Callaghan, Siamsa Tíre founder Pat Ahern and Kerry Group chairman Michael Dowling.
